Habitat and Advocacy

“While Habitat for Humanity works to partner with as many families to provide decent, affordable housing, the worldwide housing crisis remains huge. To address this need, Habitat for Humanity recently began to pair its successful building efforts with advocacy around housing issues. Through advocacy, Habitat for Humanity will work to change the systems that lead to poverty housing and give even more families a place to call home.” - Habitat for Humanity International

Part of Habitat for Humanity of Colorado’s mission is to “provide statewide leadership toward the creation of thriving communities that support healthy families”. HFHC cannot meet this challenge without the help of our partners around the state. It is to this end that HFHC monitors, and when needed, acts upon legislation affecting our ability to build, the quality of life for our homeowners and the general state of affordable housing throughout Colorado. Together we can create a Colorado that is able to better meet the housing needs for the vulnerable citizens in our communities – so that all of our families have a foundation upon which they can build hope for a better future.

Habitat for Humanity of Colorado coordinates two main advocacy events throughout the year:

1. Legislative Luncheon- HFHC hosts a Legislative Luncheon for The Colorado General Assembly and Congressional staff. During the lunch legislators have a chance to meet staff, volunteers and homeowners from across the state. Legislators learn about affordable housing issues, HFHC’s legislative agenda, the Habitat for Humanity program model, and the difference it makes in the lives of families.

2. Habitat Builds Colorado Day - Affiliates host their own events’ for Habitat Builds Colorado Day on the construction site. Affiliates are encouraged to invite elected officials, government employees and local media to learn about Habitat for Humanity while partnering with their community. Building along side homeowners provides an opportunity to grasp the importance of Habitat for Humanity’s mission.
