"By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God..."
-- Hebrews 11:3
The 11th chapter of Hebrews is the great faith chapter in the Bible. It starts by proclaiming, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for..." Examples of faith are enumerated throughout the chapter. And, the challenge to have faith continues on into chapter 12. We are told to "run with endurance" the race of faith.
Within Habitat for Humanity we have always sought to "build on faith." That's why we have an annual "Building on Faith" week. We want to emphasize that the essence of who we are as a ministry and as a movement of God is based on Christian faith.
The world was "framed by the word of God," states the scripture above. We want to frame every house we build by that same powerful word of God.
My personal faith is rooted in Jesus Christ. Habitat for Humanity as an organization is deeply rooted in that same faith. But, while Habitat is openly and unashamedly Christian, we are not exclusive. We build for all people in need, to the extent of our ability and without regard to race or religion. We believe that God's love extends to all people. And, we welcome support from all people who desire to be of help, regardless of their faith commitment. Our door is open to all who want to help end the shame and disgrace of poverty housing.
We cannot, however, and we must not diminish our faith commitment. We cannot and we must not exclude Jesus and faith in Him, as we warmly accept and embrace others who may have a different faith commitment. Again, as Hebrews states so boldly, out of weakness, faith gives strength.
To continue to build as we should, the strength that comes from faith is essential.
Lord, increase our faith so we can continue to build to your glory and so more precious families will have a good and decent place to live.
