Habitat for Humanity of Colorado: Hurricane Response

Habitat for Humanity International has launched "Operation Home Delivery," a long-term response to providing rebuilding opportunities. Habitat will build hundreds, if not thousands of homes in the affected areas. In the first phase of rebuilding, 250 homes are being built, taken apart, and shipped in containers to several of the Habitat affiliates in the region. This "Home in a Box" concept was unveiled in Rockefeller Plaza in NYC and broadcast on the NBC Today Show in September. Given the requirements of acquiring land, meeting building codes, and building homes that are suited to the area, the bulk of the building efforts will take place on site. Volunteer teams will ultimately be needed to help build homes, but infrastructure in the affected areas simply does not support new home construction at this time. Understandably, the logistics are huge and complex and will take time to arrange. Habitat for Humanity's goal is to be steady and thoughtful so that we can offer a logical and efficient rebuilding plan. Please go to www.habitat.org to find out more.

Habitat affiliates all over the state are coming together as a part of Operation Home Delivery, assisting families affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Habitat for Humanity of Colorado will coordinate a collaborative effort to raise and manage funds and coordinate the response on behalf of all Colorado affiliates. HFHC will wait for guidance from Habitat for Humanity International as to the nature of this response which could include the construction or sponsorship of a “House in a Box”, sponsorship of a Colorado home for a displaced Gulf Coast family, or simply a contribution to the coordinated effort to rebuild the region. By coming together around this great cause, we can alleviate the burden on each affiliate and can utilize the wonderful individual strengths of each community to truly build something great! At the same time, we have the opportunity to highlight the need for affordable housing in Colorado, and the work Habitat is doing across our state.
